Goals And Challenges For This Project

When we came along, the company at that time had an old and dated website. The client did have their website set up as an ecommerce site, but there were clearly missed opportunities to increase conversions. On top of that, the site was not set up with the best and most reliable SEO practices. So from an SEO perspective, there was a lot we could do to improve the company’s prospects from an organic traffic perspective.

How We Achieved SEO Success

As we alluded to earlier, the client needed a new website. They had an ecommerce website already established, but we knew we could improve it. We already had a plan to give it a modern and more structured makeover, and in the process, establish a better and more effective SEO framework. The pathway to SEO for ecommerce success was clear for us, so here is what we did to achieve our goals for this project:

Step 1: Website Redesign

We always prefer to start an SEO project at the web design phase, especially when it comes to bigger projects that involve ecommerce websites. This allows us to put proper SEO practices in place from the foundation of the project and right through to the completion of the project. During this stage of the project, we planned to:

  • Complete redesign of the company’s website
  • Upgrade the look of the website to make it modern and clean
  • Create a user-friendly and mobile-friendly website
  • Make a more organized and practical ecommerce website
  • Set up a clean website code
  • Host the site on a trusted infrastructure
  • Make a design that helps generate more leads
  • Design landing pages for cities and specific categories of products

Step 2: Planning The Keywords

The great thing about getting the opportunity to design a new site for a customer is that it gives us the opportunity to develop an intimate knowledge of the company’s products. So as we were working on the new site, we could start thinking about the main keywords we would have to optimize. This made planning our list of keywords that much easier. This is what we did:

  • Spoke with the client about the hierarchy of products/categories and what we should focus on
  • Looked into the search volume of keywords
  • Spoke with the client about cities they could service, including cities in Canada and the US
  • Looked into competitor keywords and rankings
  • Made a list of primary, secondary and tertiary keywords
  • Looked into trends that could introduce new keywords

Step 3: Website Content

Since we were working with an old website, we had to do an audit of the current content to see what we could use, what we could improve on, and what we could do without. One thing we noticed early in that project was that the old site was lacking in high-quality content, particularly on the blog. Ultimately, there was a lot we could do to inject the new website with really good content. This is what we did:

  • Came up with ideas and topics for articles and landing pages
  • Wrote articles for the blog
  • Wrote content for landing pages
  • Wrote product and product category details
  • Came up with fresh content for the website (homepage, about us, etc.)
  • Updated images on the website with pictures from the client
  • Strategically placed videos from the client in different areas of the website

Step 4: On-Page SEO

Not a lot of users can hone in on the many on-page SEO tactics that web designers and SEO practitioners implement to help give a website an SEO boost. But when it came to this SEO for ecommerce project, there was so much that we had to do. Our plan was to:

  • Create proper header tags across the site (H1s, H2s, etc.)
  • Use the right keywords on specific pages and place them within the first 200 words of said web page
  • Interlinked various pages (product pages, blog articles, shop page, etc.)
  • Condensed image file sizes
  • Wrote proper alt text for all images on the website
  • Come up with good meta information that can help convert users
  • Develop clean, structured data for the site
  • Disavow any and all spammy links

Step 5: Off-Site SEO

With everything we did to optimize things on the new website we created, we could then turn our focus to the tactics we could execute off-site. Since we were establishing a new ecommerce site, it made a lot of sense to get to work on building the authority of our new ecommerce website. This is what we did to help with that:

  • Set up tired link building (white hat tactics)
  • Obtained high-quality backlinks to the site from authoritative websites
  • Created and published guest articles for blogs
  • Created content to place on other websites
  • Managed the company’s Google My Business account
  • Managed the company’s social media channels
  • Created citations for the company on business listing websites
  • Created videos for the company’s YouTube channel
